The "WGTWDW" Podcast Show # 18

On this weeks show we spin that great Wheel of Attractions yet again. We then try out a new game for the show and then talk about the new Pixar movie Brave...It was Really Good!
We also reach out to our listeners to help us with audio recordings at the parks. If your going, let us know before hand at WGTWDW@gmail.com and I'll set you up with a good smart phone voice recorder.

On this show we really discovered one very important fact.  Using 15-30 seconds of carnival music to intro the Wheel of Attractions...Good.  Using it for a background loop for more than one minute...Very Very Bad.  It will not happen again.  For those that don't know our Wheel of Attractions has been with us for the last 16 or so shows.  For those that read these side-notes, you'll be the only ones to know that we might not really have a huge carnival wheel mounted in the office which we spin each show.  For the record, to "backup" the wheel, we use an online randomizer and just as we get to the 16 second mark on the wheel spin noise, I hit enter and the randomizer tells us what we are going to talk about.  So we are talking cold on whatever comes up.  It's great watching the kids hear the name of the attraction and then focus in on the what, where, and our experiences with it and then talk it out.
20DQ
We tried something new this week in the on the air, Hope named game, 20DQ.  This is the classic 20 questions with Disney Parks, Movies or Characters instead of Animal, Vegetable, or Mineral.  We did three rounds this week with each taking a turn.  If we do this again, we'll only do one per show.  Unless it's guessed quickly.  The idea to try this on the show came from my friends over at the Be Our Guest Podcast Forums.  There is a group of us that regularly play a game of Guess Where this Picture Is Taken.  Once in a while I'll bring the kids in to consult and we thought since people like playing that game, maybe we can do one for those listeners not on the computer out there.  A quick mind exercise.  So if you like this.  Email us and let us know.  WGTWDW@Gmail.com I think my over-under for saying the email address on the show was around 10.  Trying to push it, can you tell?

Quinn's turn at 20DQ was the perfect lead in to the Pixar Movie Brave.  We saw this the day after release and had a great time.  Lesley was there with us.  The movie was great.  As I said on the show it took all of about 10 seconds for me to say, "WOW!"   The animation was breathless.  I've had time to think about it and my thinking on the movie was great in all regards except for story.  Not sure if they spent enough time on the triplets and other minor things.
  • Pixar Short at the beginning was the best so far, La Luna.
  • Stay to the very end, after the credits.  It's worth it.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for the Pixar items found in all movies. Witches House
  • Music was really good as you can hear on the show.
I bought that single right away, not sure about the whole album yet.  We will see this again.  Make sure you see it, it was worth it.

Thanks for listening and supporting the show.  Don't forget to email the show your thoughts, ideas or questions for the show to WGTWDW@Gmail.com (that's 11).

John Carter of Mars is Official and On It's Way

Last March I had posted an article about a book that was rumoured to be coming to Pixar, John Carter of Mars. Here's the link to the post : http://themazdisneyblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/pixars-turn-at-john-carter-from-mars.html
The rumour is more than true in that Sci-Fi Wire just announced that Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in the Wolverine movie will be playing John Carter. Here is a pic from IMDB.com

Andrew Stanton is still on as director and this thing looks ready to go. The writing is done and the latest rumour is that they'll be filming in Utah. I can't wait for this to happen and will be keeping up to date with new events. Hit some of the links from the first post. The websites are up-dating with new info also.

Pixar's turn at John Carter from Mars

I have read a couple accounts of how Pixar might be bringing this Edgar Rice Burroughs classic Science Fiction series to the silver screen. For those that don’t know, the John Carter character was a Civil War era soldier transported to Mars. As Mars’ gravity is less than Earth’s, John ends up with super-human strength. He then goes on to adventure after adventure fighting martians and helping the Princess. When I say might, I mean I have not seen any articles that have been dated past 10/10/2007. Suite101 reported;

The rumors are true. After becoming the top name in family-oriented CGI animated films, Pixar has announced that they are adapting the John Carter of Mars series for the silver screen.”

That’s great news, until I read on how this has been tried many times. In 1936 this was to be the first feature length animated movie, but as we know that honor went to Walt Disney and his Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. They even had Burroughs on board to consult on the project. It appears MGM did not want to be so serious and they canned the project. The second attempt was when stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen attempted to spearhead a live action version of the book on the heels of his success with 7th Voyage of Sinbad in the late 50's. This however quickly became overwhelming in scale so much that this attempt had to be stopped. In the 1970’s, when Bob Clampett , who had worked with MGM on the 30’s version, took the clips they had animated on a College and University speaking tour. This was incredible work for the era. Time and again we hear in the Disney animation world how hard it is to animate the human form. Based on these clips it looks like Bob and his crew were well on their way to doing a good job. With this tour, there was a lot of new interest, but no film.

The eight legged horse looks a lot like an animal that might have appeared in the Animated Rock'n Roll feature Heavy Metal. Here is another site I found. Take a look at the concept art work created at about the same time Design Conepts . The next attempt to take this to the big screen was in the 1980’s with the Disney Company Touchstone talking about creating a live-action movie. The director connected to this try was John Mctiernan of Die Hard and Predator fame. There was also roles in this version offered to Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts. Rising costs would shelve this project again. The next time this story was proposed for a movie was in 2005. The director for this go around would have been John Favreau. That also fell thru and left the way open for Disney/Pixar to buy the rights. So now it looks like its Pixar’s turn. The reports I have read say that this would be a combination of real life/animation. There was also a comment about how this would be Pixar’s first film taken from an existing work of literature. I look forward to seeing this come to fruition. But we’ll see. IMDB.com has this listed as a 2009 release. A couple of other sources claim 2010 and 2012. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I could not find any information past 10/10/2007. So I will keep my eyes open for further updates.
